It's a familiar scenario: You walk into your kitchen and find a thick, bustling trail of black ants marching toward a crumb on the bench. You reach for the bug spray, douse the trail, wipe them up, and declare victory. But three days later, they’re back—and this time, they’re coming from two different directions.

Why does this happen? The answer lies in the highly complex survival instincts of ant colonies.

Over-the-counter insect sprays are "contact killers." They work by immediately poisoning the ants they touch. When you spray a trail, you successfully kill the 50 or 100 worker ants that you can see.

However, the worker ants you see represent a tiny fraction (often less than 5%) of the total colony hidden inside your walls or under your paving. The queen, who sits safely at the center, can lay thousands of eggs a day, easily replacing the workers you just killed.
