Spider Management

Redback Spiders vs. White-Tails

Perth is home to some highly venomous spiders. Learn how to identify their distinct webs and where they prefer to hide in your yard.

Know Your Enemy

Identifying Perth's Most Common Dangerous Spiders

Perth's warm climate is ideal for a variety of arachnids, but two species cause the most concern for homeowners: the notorious Redback spider and the elusive White-Tail spider. Knowing how to identify them, where they live, and how to respond if you find one is essential for keeping your family safe.

While clearing out webs and shaking out your shoes are good habits, the most effective way to manage these venomous spiders is by eliminating their food source and treating their habitual hiding spots.

A comprehensive perimeter spray from MasterGuard Pest Solutions acts as a barrier, preventing these pests from entering your living spaces.

Key Differences & Habitats

Understand the distinct characteristics and preferred hiding spots of these two common Perth spiders.

01

Redback Spider Identification

The defining feature is a prominent red stripe on the upper side of its black, pea-shaped abdomen. Only the female is dangerous and carries this marking.

02

Redback Habitats

They build messy, tangled webs, usually in dry, sheltered areas. Look inside old plant pots, under outdoor furniture, or under the rim of rubbish bins.

03

The Redback Bite

Highly venomous and immediately painful. Symptoms escalate to severe pain, sweating, nausea, and vomiting. Apply an ice pack and seek medical attention.

04

White-Tail Identification

Dark-grey or brownish cylindrical body with a distinct white spot located at the very tip (tail) of their abdomen. They are active hunters, not web-spinners.

05

White-Tail Habitats

They prefer damp, dark places. Indoors, they often hide in bedding, folded clothes, shoes left on the floor, or between towels in the bathroom.

06

The White-Tail Bite

Causes initial pain, redness, and swelling, similar to a bee sting. Wash the area with soap and water, apply ice, and consult a doctor if it worsens.
